Volvo BM Valmet 1982-1986

What happened in 1978-1979?
- Volvo BM planned to continue their tractor production in to the 1980's with new models and it looked like if the city of Eskilstuna was still the center of tractor production. However the top leader of Volvo and the top leader of Valmet from Finland met and began to talk about if they could make tractor production easier by making it together. The both companies set up a "Letter of Intent".

SCANTRAC
- To make a long story short a new company was started: SCANTRAC. Their job was to market Volvo BM tractors that was still in production. They also planned for coming, totally new models from "The Nordic Tractor" - VOLVO BM VALMET.

- Volvo BM had planned for 4WD on T650/T700 and the new D/TD45 engine in these models. This project was stopped in favour for the new nordic tractor. While the Volvo BM factory made the last ones of the 22-series until 1981 and the T650/700 until 1982 and the 26-series until 1983, totally new models was constructed. In 1982 just in time for the ELMIA show new models could be presented to potential buyers.

What was swedish and what was finnish?
- To begin with the staff at Volvo design group was involved. Some similarities can be seen to the Volvo 740 car model. When production started Volvo BM made components in the transmission and the plant in Hallsberg made the cabs for Volvo BM Valmet.

Volvo BM Valmet is just VALMET
- Volvo BM was planning to quit tractor production and instead go 100 % for the construction equipment. Therefore from 1987 the tractor was called just VALMET without the Volvo BM name on it.  After a while Volvo BM sold their shares in Scantrac to Valmet. It seemed to be the end for Volvo BM tractors.....or?

Volvo BM Valmet 2005 and 2105
- Well, it wasn´t finished until Valmet had come up with their new models, bigger than the 905. Until then the Volvo BM 2654 based model 2005 was built in the  Eskilstuna plant. Volvo BM Valmet 2005 with a TD60 engine was introduced together with the 2105 equipped with an Intercooler to make the power even stronger. Other improvements from the 2654 model was also made. Real 4WD and better hydraulics to mention the most important.

What happened after that?

Only yellow machines from Volvo

Valmet continued producing tractors in Finland,
but also in Brazil. This is an early model called
361D, before getting together with Volvo.

- Valmet continued to develop new tractors while Volvo BM continued to focus on construction equipment. It seems like both companies have been good at it. The most "swedish" tractor available now in the year of 2006 I guess is the Valtra tractor because staff from Volvo BM was involved in the Valmet tractors and some still is. That way the Volvo BM legacy still live in the Nordic Tractor. The Valmet tractor later changed name to Valtra/Valmet and later to Valtra.

Staff from former Volvo BM farm tractors departement have been involved in the construction of Valmet tractors so the legacy from BM Volvo is still alive in Valtra tractors. This is an unofficial webpage. For official information - look at VALTRA
